My concept is around the idea of knowing, predicting, and/or influencing the future. I used to agonize over what the future may have in store for me. I spent hundreds, probably thousands of dollars at this point on guides and mediums to help me predict what is ultimately totally unpredictable. What came up repeatedly in those sessions throughout the years was the notion that by predicting the future one could somehow control the future.
We like to think that we have some level of control over ourselves and the world around us because this makes us feel secure. The thought that we actually have no control over anything or anyone is madness-inducing (or totally liberating, depending on how you look at it.) For me, internalizing this wisdom has actually helped me to live less in my head and more in the world and in the moment.
Does this mean we should not plan for the future? Or try to prevent disaster from happening? Or try to implement change? Of course not. While we cannot (totally) control our destiny, personal or collective, we can certainly influence it, and every single little decision you make today eventually turns into the wave you're riding into the future, even if you don't know exactly how it will turn out.
I sat with that, and it encouraged me to love harder, to speak my truth, to stand up for others, to make environmentally conscious decisions... it made me a better person.
"Oracle" is an original collage piece. To create the eye, I made a mosaic of hundreds of eyes I have shot over the last 11 years. In so doing, I was able to have a look back at my past while creating art about the future.
